Welcome to the sister website of the Food Refrigeration and Process Engineering Research Centre (FRPERC) at The Grimsby Institute (GIFHE).

For over 50 years we have been active in Food Process Engineering research.  This website has been produced to review, celebrate, and conserve the Food Process Engineering research carried out by us in our previous incarnations at Langford, and to report on the continuing research being carried out by the re-established FRPERC at Grimsby.

The Food Refrigeration & Process Engineering Research Centre (FRPERC) was established in 1991 as part of the University of Bristol.  The staff had previously been members of the Institute of Food Research – Bristol Laboratory (IFR-BL; formally the Meat Research Institute (MRI) before that) founded in 1967.  In 2009 FRPERC moved from the University of Bristol and is now part of the Grimsby Institute of Further & Higher Education (GIFHE) in Grimsby (“Europe’s Food Town”).  The group also works in close partnership with the National Centre for Food Manufacturing at the University of Lincoln.  2016 marked our 25th year of operation as FRPERC, and 2017 marked the 50th anniversary of our foundation as part of the MRI at Langford.

We have experience and knowledge on many aspects of the chilling, freezing, thawing, tempering, refrigerated storage, refrigerated transport, refrigerated retail display, domestic handling and refrigerated storage, cooking, pasteurisation, reheating, decontamination, hygienic processing, robotic handling, automated handling, and cutting of many different foods.

We are here to help all parts of the food industry with any production and process engineering problems they may have.  We have extensive experience of working with all sizes of company, from large multi-nationals to one-man-bands, and all types of foods, from raw meats, poultry, fish and vegetables to processed ready meals.
