The main movement of staff and equipment from the Low Temperature Research Station (LTRS) at Cambridge (from which many of the original staff at the MRI came) took place during October and November 1967 and by the end of February 1968 all major parts of the building were available for occupation.
The MRI was formally opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth on the 19th April 1968 (as shown in the photo above).
Stephen J. James, founder and Director of FRPERC, was one of the first staff to begin working on the Langford site in September 1967. FRPERC has always dated its start at Langford from this date.
The 40th anniversary of the official opening of the MRI by the Queen was celebrated by a reunion of staff held at Langford on the 19th April 2008.
